On a recent wander round sheffield I noticed a large ‘welcome to sheffield’ sign posted on a building near what had once been the hole in the road more recently filled in with the rubble from the egg box. It was odd as it was on a road going out of the city. Underneath an advertising hoarding periodically flicked between three alternate slogans, forming the parallel yet accidental statements …. ‘Welcome to sheffield’ - lets go to work, ‘Welcome to sheffield’ - more tv to watch right now than anywhere else, ‘Welcome to sheffield’ - say hello to the new iphone. Collectively these statements seem to sum up some of the currents flowing through the city and perhaps form the basis for a new understanding between work, leisure and commodity …..
